Just looks like a beach, but look closer and you'll see Eastern Australian's Dash 8 on final approach for Lord Howe. We were sitting on the seawall on the threshold.

This is Ball's Pyramid. An impressive piece of Volcanic rock rising out of the ocean, 20kms south of Lord Howe, it is the only remains of a large volcanic crater rim. Nearly 2000 feet high, it is home to thousands of nesting seabirds and rare sealife.

We flew around and around and around and around Ball's Pyramid, trying to get the best shots we could. Here you can see how the rock is curved, making a piece of the volcanic crater.

Coming around again, you can see how isolated this piece of rock really is, alone in an ocean of blue. line.jpg (727 bytes)

Here you see how sharp this rock really is, and how narrow. The surrounding coral reefs make excellent diving, home to some rare species of fish, like Ballina AngelFish, once thought to be extinct.
